Cardinal Richelieu

King Louis XIII

Back home, the French leaders endeavored to forestall hostilities between the two by dividing the colony, but since they lacked a current map, they inadvertently divided the land in a way that portions of French land were being left in their rivals’ hands.[xix] At Port Royal in 1640, the rivalry burst into open conflict when La Tour arrived in port to buy furs and ended up in Boston, which by then was already part of an English colony, as a part of his route. D’Aulnay blockaded Port Royal and had La Tour accused of treason,[xx] and in 1645, d’Aulnay gathered a militia to lay siege to La Tour’s stronghold on New Brunswick. In the furious battle and aftermath, La Tour’s beloved wife died.[xxi] Heartbroken, he gathered his forces and influence in Boston to counter his rival’s actions, but in May 1650, d’Aulnay died in the wilderness beyond Port Royal, bringing a about a natural conclusion to the conclusion.[xxii] Through it all, the nominal capital of Acadia continued to endure through the late 17th century and into the 18th century.
